Is your question not already answered in the FAQ?

Is this a general question and not a technical issue?

Question

I have been running an older version of Xpenology 6.2.3 as a VM in Proxmox and wish to switch to the latest DSM 7 versions to match my physical Synology NAS.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of going with a virtual-dsm Docker container (in Proxmox)?

How challenging will it be to transfer the files from the old Xpenology to the new virtual-dsm instance?

The advantages are that it is a stock (unmodified) version, that does not contain modified bootloaders or other hacks that will break during upgrades. It's much easier to setup/install than Xpenology and you can even downgrade DSM while keeping your files.

But the biggest advantage is: you do NOT need Proxmox! So in your case the biggest advantage is gone, because you already have Proxmox.

The disadvantage are that it contains no free licenses for Surveillance Station, has no Virtual Machine Manager package, and has no support for RAID (but you can have your host provide that).

Having used both myself (redpill xpenology) and this docker, this docker wins hands down for simplicity, with Xpenology and redpill you had to check how others faired with DSM upgrades where this docker just updates like a normal Synology Nas. I run it in pure docker environment as no longer use proxmox but it runs like a dream.

With regards to moving files, just set up a vdsm docker on your proxmox, and once set up folder wise etc use one of the synology to synology back up apps or just mount both SMB shares and copy accross. Plenty of ways to achieve that end goal
