Validation Class needs to be inherited and tests need to be added

Make sure you have:

[ not done yet ] added the necessary updates to docs/whatsnew.rst
[ not done yet ] added documentation for new features
[ not done yet ] run bumpversion and reset conda build number if you are preparing a new release
