Name the “Seed” in “Bulbasaur, the Seed Pokémon” #52

Alternatives: – species: Used on veekun since the brown version. Also used on the pokemon.com pokédex. Clashes with the “thing with its own pokédex number” concept. – category: Used on pokemonblackwhite.com – classification, categorization, sorting: edict’s translations of 分類, which is used in the pokédex at www.pokemon.co.jp – kind: used on veekun before the brown version – genus, phylum: “the only other part of the bio hierarchy that’s very obviously from that hierarchy” – taxonomy

IRC discussion from Jan. 28, emphasis added:

<Eevee> 15:47 < EnCuKou\> veekun should say “Category: Victory Pokémon” instead of “Species: Victory”
<Eevee> **‘phylum’**
<Zhorcott> that is totally wrong
<Eevee> I am aware
<Zhorcott> \>:(
<Eevee> however it’s the only other part of the bio hierarchy that’s very obviously from that hierarchy
<Eevee> oh, wait. **‘taxonomy’**?
<Zhorcott> **genus**?
<Eevee> durr
<Eevee> that also works
<Zhorcott> haha
<Zhorcott> I’d still go with **“Classification”** over that
<Zhorcott> even **“Category”** is better, especially with its officialness points
<magicko> Category is too generic though
<Eevee> it’s not a category reeeally though :(
<Zhorcott> yeah…
<magicko> and that
<Eevee> e.g. genus can contain only one species
<Eevee> doesn’t imply a big grouping
<Zhorcott> well the point is it’s **not** a biological grouping
<Zhorcott> there is no link between Flygon and Xatu
<Zhorcott> it’s more a category than a genus
<Zhorcott> “Category” at least doesn’t suggest any relation outside of the categorization
<Zhorcott> I have a bigger beef with the fact that it suggests a system with a fixed list of categories, like types
<Zhorcott> or the FR/LG habitats
<magicko> but it’s not even a categorization
<Zhorcott> I guess that is related to what Eevee said
<magicko> it’s more just descriptive
<Zhorcott> yeah
<Zhorcott> dywypi: jdic @bunrui
<dywypi> Zhorcott: 分類 [ぶんるい] / (n,vs) classification/categorization/sorting/ (P)/
<Zhorcott> hmmmm
<Zhorcott> Bulbapedia doesn’t say where they **got** that word, though
<Zhorcott> and this is from the article “Species”

I’m going with genus for now since it has to be renamed to something.

I was kidding with genus :(

Comment by Eevee from 2011/05/09 03:03:59 +0000

I kinda like “genus” and don’t have any better ideas.

encukou commented 12 years ago

Are we going with genus, then?

magical commented 12 years ago

We could sidestep the issue almost entirely and just display "The Seed Pokémon".

encukou commented 12 years ago

I like that. But we still have to name the DB/API field.

CatTrinket commented 12 years ago

I definitely don't like "genus". The official thing is "classification" or "category" or something, which would at least be an improvement I guess.

encukou commented 12 years ago

Well if it has an official name, it's a no-brainer, really. Source?

CatTrinket commented 12 years ago

http://www.pokemonblackwhite.com/en-us/pokemon/virizion/ -- It's "category", which I don't like much, and I don't remember if I've seen it anywhere other than pokemonblackwhite.com. Note that vee and magical also express dissatisfaction with that in the log.

encukou commented 12 years ago

Right, it's mentioned at the top of the report, sorry.

It's about as official as the breeding group names. Not such a no-brainer after all :(

CatTrinket commented 11 years ago

For the record, "category" now appears in Pokédex 3D and Pokédex 3D Pro, so it's more concretely official. (At least, I'm 99% sure; I don't have my 3DS here to double-check.)
