pv's ribbon render is too skinny, making it difficult to see the changes.

It's possible to increase the ribbon radius. I'm sticking with that for now.

pv seems to have some undocumented support for surface rendering, but I haven't figured out how to use it yet.

Also, pv is in maintenance mode, so it might not be worth spending too much time figuring it out. Consider switching to NGL or similar, which is under active development.
