Switch from phpBB3 to Discourse #8

What do you guys say that we switch our forum infrastructure from phpBB to Discourse?

You can check it out here: https://try.discourse.org/

And we even don't have to lose history! We can import our entire phpBB3 history, as detailed here: https://meta.discourse.org/t/importing-from-phpbb3/30810

@BenjamenMeyer @www2000 - Do you think it's viable?

BenjamenMeyer commented 4 years ago

We gain web identity federation so folks can use GitHub and other stuff for authentication if they don't want to create a specific account. So I'm for it as it'll lower the entry barrier.

In the end, it's up to @www2000 since he'd have to do the work and maintain the server(s).

Any chance we can somehow help you @www2000 with his server administration? I don't want the entire pressure of the job to be just on you, especially if the community is going to become active and big.

We'll want OpenID support: https://meta.discourse.org/t/openid-connect-authentication-plugin/103632

There's a bunch of plugins we might want to add there. Including powerfull Github and Gitter integrations. But first we need to get the platform itself :)

www2000 commented 4 years ago

The only problem that i current see is that that mediawiki have a Gitter plugin for logins

BenjamenMeyer commented 4 years ago

@www2000 https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:OpenID_Connect would enable GitHub with MediaWiki.

nabaco commented 4 years ago

@www2000 would you be able to install Discourse on our server? At least just for initial testing?

www2000 commented 4 years ago

Update from me. Current i continue with phpbb. This is through lack of documentation at the moment (for me is the documentation on smtp settings) and high resource use on my vps. But i keep a eye on this for the future.
