I can't offer an official response.
However, I can tell you that this subject has been raised before.
It would be impossible to port VelbusLink to a cross-platform language as it stands, so if / when there is a solution, it will have been re-written from scratch.
Hi @ratranqu, first off sorry for the late response, great to hear you're a happy Velbus user!
As @MDAR states, there is no provided solution to run VelbusLink through Linux/macOS. You could try running it through Wine?.
For next year, we are making a cross-platform rewrite of VelbusLink, but can't give any timelines on that right now.
@pvanloo Now that a couple of months have passed, is there already more clear with regards to the timeline of the cross-platform rewrite? I'm currently considering KNX and velbus and having a configuration application that works natively on Linux would be a big plus for velbus over having to run a Windows VM just to run KNX's ETS.
Also, I don't see any sources for velbuslink in this repo, is that correct? Will the rewrite be open-source?
Hi @simonvanderveldt, we currently don't have a timeline but we're planning a small internal PoC starting march and looking forward from there.
For now, this repository is just for bug tracking. We don't have an answer for open-sourcing the rewrite but it is something we consider, as our protocol is open-source.
@pvanloo OK, clear. Thanks for the quick response and information!
Hi, Just wanted to add my +1 for this issue. I currently need to maintain a Windows VM just for managing my Velbus setup. This is doable, but I'd rather avoid it.
Hi! any news on the cross platform POC?
Hi, would it be possible to unlock the status quo of having to run velbus link on windows? I have been a happy user of a velbus system for close to 10 years now, and I cannot describe the pain I have to go through when I need to change something on the installation (which is not often), and I realize that I have upgraded my OS too far and I can’t run my virtualization softwares (only used for velbus - so steep to upgrade just for that) don’t work anymore.
If the issue is about resources to port the software, maybe the community could help?
Really keen to hear back! :)
