The JSON representations require an id. Candidates are:

System.identityHash -- 32bit int, some chance of collision, does not take state into account
UUID (in java.rmi) -- unique, does not take state into account
SHA/MD5 - can take state into account

all state that would be used (to compute a SHA etc) could be included using extension fields, so if there were use cases to compare different captures and establish that equivalent activities / entities are included, we would not have to rely on the id field.

Decision: use UUID.
