new hard fork update isnt working- it keeps saying timed out when i try to open the wallet. i followed the update procedure from the verge army you tube video #539

not sure what you mean. what says timed out? just run the .exe from the releases tab and let it sync.

apparently there was an issue with the desktop shortcut , i opened it from the file and it seems to be working. thanks for your response. also, how can i tell if the hard fork update worked? i don't notice anything different in the wallet, is there a way to tell which version i have? thanks again

Mine's updating now, too. Wierd. To check the version, click on your wallet, "help" and then "about Verge" it should say 4.0.1.0, I hope (that what mine says).
