Hello, sorry if this is not the right place to put such a query. 

I use Pidgin with gtalk and am wondering if it is possible to have a separate 
chat tab for different contacts?

Yes it's possible goto :
Tools --> Preferences --> Interface --> Tabs
and uncheck the tab management.

I put the bug as invalid.
