Is there a web size limit to activating VersionPress?

I'm using VP 2.2 on WP 4.5. I have something like 20 sites on this server and VP is running fine on all of them, but on one site, when I try to activate it, it just hangs and doesn't go through with the activation. I tried letting it go overnight, but it didn't work, just hung in the browser.

This is a large site, 17228 entries. Is it not possible to activate with that many entries?

17k entities is not that much, I think we tested with hundreds of thousands of entities and, given enough execution time, it worked fine. @pavelevap might remember more details.

Could you try to work out where it hangs? There have been some rare bugs in INI serialization in VP 2.2, maybe that might be causing that instead of a large number of entities.

Could you try with VP 3.0 beta?

unfortunately can't use 3.0 because i'm not running a new enough version of php on the server.

update on a copy of this site on the same server:

i disabled comet cache, wordfence and updraftplus. the site went into maintenance mode for 10 minutes or so. the versionpress activation window was stalled the whole time. after the site came out of maintenance, I clicked back on "VersionPress" to get to the main VP screen, and it brought me back to the activation screen. It's as if it went into maintenance, tried to start tracking, and couldn't.

next, i disabled all plugins except versionpress. this time, as it tried to activate, it went into maintenance mode, then, it took me to a 404: wp-admin/admin.php?page=versionpress/admin/index.php&init_versionpress i took the site out of maintenance mode and went back to the dashboard - it said VP wasn't tracking the site yet. tried it again, same thing happened.

finally, i tried deleting 500 posts just to make fewer entries to see what happened, but it didn't change the outcome.

Also, if it helps, when I try to activate VP, it creates the vpdb and wflogs directories under wp-content, but it does NOT create the git repository.

One of the ways to find out where it hangs is to sort out the INI files in vpdb by date created. The most recently created INI file might be the one causing the issue. (I'm still assuming that you're hitting some kind of INI parsing bug which might be wrong, but it'd be the first place I'd look at.)

Ok, there are 3,426 INI files in vpdb. This is most recently created one:

it looks like it stopped as it was creating INI files for slugs. it had already created 3,021 INI in the posts folder.

Also, it hadn't generated the comments folder yet, web.config, .active or .htaccess. (I'm comparing this install on a live server vs another one I have locally on xampp)

I still think it's caused by some INI issue. Some were resolved in VP 3.0, could you try to create a DB dump, restore the site locally somewhere, install VP 3.0-beta there and try again? That would help narrow the issue down.

I have a version of this site installed locally, and VP 2.2 runs fine. I can try deactivating it and using 3.0 if that would help.

I just pulled the database down to the local version (where VP is working). In vpdb, they have just about the same number of entries (the local version has one more INI in the Options folder, but otherwise the amount is exactly the same in each folder). It seems like it's creating all of the INI files, then stopping its process.
