These 10 and 20-year moving averages of annual diversions from the two canals below the Tuolumne River rim dam indicate that WY1950 may be used as a cutoff date. Before that date, diversions were steadily increasing independent of WYT or SJVI.
^Though not as clear as the previous graphs, I chose to use WY 1980 as the cutoff for the Madera Canal. (below Upper San Joaquin River rim dam)

Lastly, USGS Records for Northside Canal at Merced Falls, CA (11270800) only exist from WY 1987-1994, so I would recommend using the entire period of record.
