Is there anything we can actually do about this, apart from preventing the use 
of transparent selection colours?

Presumably it should be transparent-to-the-background-of-the-window, and not 
any further :)

This has been resolved in r3752, by pre-blending the text selection background 
with the text view background if the selection colour has an alpha component.  
(This seems to be something related to how NSTextViews normally draw their 
selection - this happens in a way that doesn't correctly support colours with 
an alpha component.)
