SVG image support #121

Open GoogleCodeExporter opened 9 years ago

t would be nice if xmind added to it's capabilities the ability to
directly use SVG images in a mindmap, as well as being able to export
a mindmap to SVG (in addition to the bitmap formats currently
available).

As for using SVG images, I think the important requirements would be (in my
opinion):

1) ability to show SVG image in a node (just like one can do with JPG, PNG,
etc.,
scaling it if desired)

2) ability to launch external editor program to edit SVG image (displayed image
in
node would be updated when SVG file changes). -- this would also be good to
have for
images in general -- the ability to define an associated editor program, and to
right-click on the image and select "Edit image".

In addition to support for SVG images in Nodes, it would be wonderful if XMind
supported export to some sort of a vector output. I was hoping to use XMind
for
creating Mindmaps for a book I am writing. For this, it is very important that
I
have a vector based format (SVG, PDF or EPS would all be acceptable).
Unfortunately, XMind only supports raster based export.

This means that to process my MindMaps, I first need to export to MindManager
and
then use MindManager to export a vector based PDF. In the process I lose
information and the formatting is changed. And when my 30 day trial of
MindManager
runs out, I'm screwed.

To make matters worse, the PDF export in Linux is completely broken. Instead
of
creating a high resolution image of the map (as it should), it generates a low
resolution copy that is expanded to the size of the paper.

These limitations make XMind wholey unsuited to the project I'm working on,
which is
a true shame since I would love to include beautiful mindmaps to supplement the
material I am describing in my book.

I very strongly second the request for the vector based output. It is the one
problem I have with actually using this otherwise excellent tool in two
projects. (I
use latex in making a book-in-progress, lecture notes, etc... I need to use
vector
based output, not bitma)

Either svg or pdf would work, but would prefer pdf, if only one. Preferably, a
pdf
that is sized according to the size of the diagram, not a page...or an option
for
choosing either.

Hi jworkerbee, I found a workaround. (And even better, it does not require
the
professional version. Is there any way that I could have my money refunded?)
A
vector PDF can be created by printing to PDF using cups-pdf on Linux or the
system
PDF export on Mac OS X. (I have not tested in on Windows.)

You can then edit the resulting PDF in either Inkscape or Adobe Illustrator to
clean
it up. This is handy for removing the atrocious looking plus arrows on map
branches
and ortating the output to landscape. While this is hardly an acceptable
solution,
it is, at least a solution and would allow you to use your mindmaps in your
lecture
notes/book.

Honestly, I would suggest trying to use Freeplane (
http://freeplane.sourceforge.net
)as a mindmapping tool. You can easily insert SVG images into it, and export
mindmaps
in PDF, SVG, and several other formats.

Xmind, while pretty, leaves a lot to be desired in terms of usability, and the
developer responsiveness to new feature requests seems quite low from what I've
observed.
