Because the Lilypond format is extremely complex, as far as I know, there is no
parser except Lilypond itself that can read Lilypond notation. Lilypond's .ly
files can define Scheme functions that can allow for very complex notation, but
makes it almost impossible for a program not written in Scheme to produce
itself. This would need to be an enhancement request for a lilypond
programmer. For the near and medium-term future, Lilypond will be a write-only
format for music21.
