To teach an old dog new tricks means it is really difficult to change someone's habits or acquiring new skills.

Acquire (verb) - to obtain something by buying or being given it.

Manning hoped to acquire valuable works of art as cheaply as possible.

Laura translates words into her own language because that's how she studied English when she was a child. Her teacher now tell her to use definitions in English, but it's hard to teach an old dog new tricks. - Laura translates because that's always been her habit, and it's difficult to change.

Kevin's grandfather is trying to learn a new language but he finds it very hard. He says you can't teach an old dog new tricks. - Kevin's grandfather has difficulties to learn something completely new because of his age.

To let sleeping dogs lie - I think it's better to let sleeping dogs lie. He doesn't need to hear that now, he's had enough bad news.

The lady needs to improve her study technique a bit but it's hard to teach an old dog new tricks.

People say that you can't teach an old dog new tricks but my grandpa learnt how to use an IPad.

They are not going to learn anything as they're too old. It's impossible to teach old dogs new tricks.
