Mrs. Miley, we must figure out what's going on with your son.
Rick? Is he not doing well, Mr. George?
I'm afraid, he isn't. I think he needs some serious guidance at home. Do you look after him personally?
Yes! I sure do. I always make him do his homework.
The thing is he breaks into fights with students every now and then. Some teachers even reported that he vandalized school property.
What?! Why on earth would he do that? I always gave him whatever he wanted.
Don't take it the wrong way, but perhaps you shouldn't have, Mrs. Miley.
Yes, I'll remember that, Mr. George. And I'll talk to hi. Please accept my apologies on his behalf.
Mrs. Justin, I went through my daughter Erin's workbook the other day. It's almost blank.
Oh Erin?! But every time I look, she's writing. How can that be?
There are only some funny sketches on it. Would you please keep a close eye on her?
This is a bit embarrassing. Please accept my sincere apologies. I'll be more careful. And you know what? Erin always sits in the last row.
I think she'll do better if you make her sit closer to you.
That's exactly what I was thinking! Don't worry, from next class on, that's what I'll do.
I appreciate it. Thank you.
Hello Peter! What brings you here today?
I came here today to thank you.
Thank me? Why?
Samuel won the National Science model exhibition! He said he was under your guidance.
Oh! That's great news! It brings me nothing but joy.
Thank you very much Mrs. Justin!
Being properly guided is important but it was all his idea. I just helped him creating the model. He is brilliant! You should take good care of him, Peter!
I do everything I can to help him.
That makes two of us. (We're in the same boat/So do I)
Why are each of the goals important?
How will you work with the villagers to take them from poverty to prosperity?
Some problems this Village has:
Food: Lack of protein in diet is affecting brain development in children. Some of the crops.
Water: There is fresh water near the west of the village but it becomes stagnant and contaminated by villagers throwing away waste waster, this leads to disease and illness.
Electricity - The village does not have electricity.
Education - There is a small primary school in the village, but that is all. Most of the villagers cannot afford to leave in order to access high quality education.
Healthcare - Villagers suffer from waterborne illness found in the ponds (this includes Malaria). Most of the villagers are vaccinated against more serious diseases.
--- Discussion Questions:
How could eliminating waste and inefficiency help end global poverty?
How does our economic system lead to global poverty?
What are some historical reasons for poverty?
Do you engage in charity work?
Do you think that poverty is an environmental issue, or a human issue? Is it caused by lack of resources, or by human behavior?
What role can private companies play in ending poverty?
