Resources will need some metadata to define how they are converted. Any resources missing metadata should have a sensible default created to make it easier to get resources into the engine. With textures for example:
.metadata would define target texture format for target platforms/configs.
Default .metadata should be influenced by the texture source format for ease. BC1 for RGB, BC3 for RGBA, etc.
