TGIK Suggestion: Slack chat instead of YouTube chat? #131

Chat during TGIK episodes are a fantastic way for the community to come together, converse, share ideas, and collaborate.

YouTube chat seems to be a bit finicky at times, but it seemed worse than usual during episode 054, in particular. A few users complained that their messages are occasionally not making it through or are being dropped. I experienced this too during episode 054 and during previous episodes.

Another minor limitation of YouTube chat is inability to share links, except for the host.

I am curious how amenable the TGIK crew would be to hosting the TGIK chat on the Kubernetes Slack.

Upside to Slack: the ability for the community to continue conversations that started during the show after the show has ended.

Downside to Slack: I'm unaware of any way to feed slack chats into the live stream video.

I am not familiar with OBS, but I found this obs-virtualcam, it might help if it works.

Having a live feed is doable. I sort of work around this for Office Hours and Meet Our Contributors by resizing the Slack window and adding it as an OBS source: https://youtu.be/P3q_5qHrea4?t=1269

Perhaps there's a slicker way to do it.

Discord(:rocket:) vs Slack(:tada:) Slack won :)

pbnj commented 4 years ago

Not sure how big the K8s Discord community is, but K8s Slack is widely adopted.

Side anecdote: I have been at companies that block Discord (due to being associated with gaming category), but use Slack.

FL3SH commented 4 years ago

Sure, are you able to create a slack channel?

stgarf commented 4 years ago

I don't want to shoot down the idea... but the chat on the side is invaluable when re-watching the videos at a later date. I don't see how reading slack or discord after the fact (or even during the live stream) would be easier. So I guess -1 for me.

pbnj commented 4 years ago

Slack and streaming chat next to the video feed are not mutually exclusive. See kubernetes office hours as an example, as @castrojo mentioned earlier in the thread.

FL3SH commented 4 years ago

Sadly, it looks like I wouldn't be able to add slack channel.

FL3SH commented 4 years ago

Are we done? We could go for IRC or Discord.

Sorry, if I am pushing too hard ;)
