It's in the title. If the filter is let empty in the Data Type config node, or indeed hardcoded to an empty string or null in the controller, the sufolders are listed, but no expand icon is shown on hover and it is not possible to expand the tree.
Should this have been fixed in 1.3.3, the I am sorry to bother you.
My umbraco is version 7.2.1 assembly: 1.0.5462.37503, as far as I know it is not modified in any way.
