Mostly fixing cross-refs in docstrings, as suggested here: https://github.com/pyOpenSci/software-submission/issues/68#issuecomment-1470879706
Also makes some minor style/formatting fixes, e.g., ".txt file" -> "txt file", adds citations in a couple places. Added type hints in validation.py.
