...and again just now? Is this a common occurrence? Maybe the developer can
provide
us with instructions on how to install this locally on our own servers to
spread the
load out a bit?

Until this problem is resolved, you might want to switch to http://embed.ly/
It's an
easy one-line code change. That's what I did and it's been working great.

Yes, oohEmbed is too popular for its own good now :)

There's nothing magic about installing oohEmbed. Just follow these steps:

1. Read Google App Engine getting started guide and get familiar with basics
2. Register an 'app' with app engine with your account
3. Take the oohEmbed source code and upload it to your new App Engine
registered app.
4. Point your code to this newly running app.
5. Profit!

I switched to embed.ly after running into oohembed quota issues, and I can
confirm it has been working
smoothly.

Solution: in your copy of jquery.oembed.js, just replace
"http://oohembed.com/oohembed/" with
"http://api.embed.ly/v1/api/oembed" (a modified minified version is attached)

We have taken several measures to improve the quality of service, including:
- paying for additional CPU and bandwidth
- blocking a few users who were not using the services correctly
- get more volunteer help

hope that the problems are things of past. Please update the issue, if you
still face problems.
