Democracy Index

There seems as though there is a correlation between "the about of democracy a society has" and how well a society flourishes. It would be good to be able to correlate a score of how much democracy a system has, say a Democracy Index (DI), with some sort of existing livability index of a society operating within that system. Because societies may operate within many systems of democracy (local, state, federal, house, senate legislative, executive, judicial, financial), it will be important to separate them and score each individually to reduce complexity. Then a method for combining each index may be discussed.

A democracy index would have to be strictly measured based on its fundamental setup (constitutions and automated procedures). In many systems, there are conventions and traditions that are not formally outlined. These democratic systems that appear in practice should also be captured. We shall the score that captures this the apparent Democracy index (aDI).

This thread is designed to capture ideas, discussion and research on the road to creating a Democracy Index

Some Ideas

The best score should be 100% and be achieved when everyone gets a vote for every issue that can be voted on (ie direct democracy). The DI may be decreased by forcing a voter to give their vote to a representative; for them to choose how your vote is used. It may be further decreased by increasing the period between elections for their representative.
