Personally I think this sets up a bit of a fallacy and false dichotomy. In LD, it could still be the most popular that become delegates; what LD allows for is the opportunity to empower the most trusted, and I do hope that with that ability, that is how people will choose, but it's not necessarily inevitable.

Plus, oftentimes candidates who "represent us" now are not the most popular, but rather those who've received a party's stamp of approval. So I'd suggest that the issue here is more about the dichotomy between: a candidate who has no relation to "trust" (party, or celebrity, or career politician whose "turn it is"), vs having the opportunity and power to choose someone you trust.
