apparently, blacksmith packages spec/fixtures/ that's not so good, especially since when spec/fixtures/ is usually a symlink, that'll break on the target system. but also because we're probably duplicating stdlib a million times ;)

perhaps it would be good if it were to ignore all patterns that are ignored in .gitignore?

It just calls the puppet module tool, there is a ticket at https://tickets.puppetlabs.com/browse/PUP-2040 and seems it was fixed for 3.7.0
