Rebase4.x #38

Here is a rebase of the 4.x branch that had gotten out of date, and quite long in the tooth. The commits here have been squashed for brevity.

@igalic Hi. This is looking close to final for merge to me, assuming the tests pass. Do you want to take a pass over it before merge? My last commit has some details you may or may not care about. This should be supporting both the legacy provider and the new one that you worked on so heavily. Let me know what you think if you don't mind.

@RainbowHackerHorse Heads up, this change may break you if you're not pinned to a release. I'll get #35 merged shortly after this one.
