When the Find window is open, one can search for the next occurrence of the search term by pressing Ctrl+G (and similarly the previous with Ctrl+Shift+G).
However, when the Find window is closed, the corresponding menu items are disabled, and Ctrl+G no longer does anything.
In e.g. MS Visual Studio, searching for the next occurrence of the previously used search term works whether or not there's a search field or dialog visible. This is pretty convinient, and I use that a lot myself. The same even works in Windows Notepad.
