Extension of dataframe abstraction as it came up
tests for the added/changed features
other tidy-ups, including abstracting out pandas from timeline.py. This wasn't planned; it was just (suprisingly) low-hanging fruit.

N.B. Since this was spontaneous procrastination from looking at the previous doc string, the branch is wrongly named.
