What I did

Add a better error message when backend cannot be reached
Update documentation explaining how to install the jupyter plugin

How I did it

Set the output to show an error message, when an element is available
Otherwise, show the message in a JS prompt

How to verify it

When running the plugin without the backend extension installed the following error is displayed:
