Editorial updates to intro mostly #260

Some minor rewordings, addressing issues #220, #219, #216, #217 and #119.

Please review these to make sure they're accurate in case the meaning was changed to something that's not right. I did each in separate commits so we can pick the ones that are accurate in case they aren't all okay.
