This also removes some spaces at the ends of lines.
Note: this is a repeat of #191, which got accidentally overwritten by subsequent changes. It was very easy to re-apply this; I just learnt all you need to do is find the commit you want to re-apply, then use git cherry-pick <hash> to replay it over the top of the current branch; nice!
