Attention needed for subscript characters #146

Character “儿” used in erhuayin is sometimes presented in subscript form in formal publications in China mainland, especially in dictionaries and educational publications. Special attention are needed for subscripts in Chinese layout, as well as formulae and Hanzi mixed text.

Many thanks!

Other examples concern scientific equations.

Notations like “F” are often seen in middle school course books.

Erhua, bopomofo, pinyin, etc, might requires more general description and solution. In classical books (like classical musical books), contemporary literature on Chinese language study and scientific coursebooks (like in chemistry), we often observe subscripts or ruby-like characters (either in hanzi or other scripts) laid on corners, left/right side of or above one single Chinese character or a few characters. These features are rather difficult to implement on web or even with professional typesetting software, and there is a lack of descriptive instructions on these cases.
