@jandrieu : Please read this one carefully. I think it's a bit more controversial than some of the others. I tried to revise in a way that made it more useful and less controversial -- but I'm not sure whether I succeeded enough.

This is fine, but it loses the question of how actual deletion is managed. Regulatory compliance is NOT the point of the original question.

Should the original question not also be addressed? Clearly not in this PR, but it seems there should now be either an issue or another (draft) PR to do so...
