Rookie of Newton on the track, will start the season with Panthers

Panthers coach Ron Rivera said Sunday that Newton has played the first three 
quarters against the Bengals, but that does not mean the rookie will be the 
starter in the 11th game of the season in September will be against the Arizona

Thursday night.

Newton started and played the first half Friday night from 20 to 10 loss to

Jimmy Clausen started the second half against the Dolphins and was 9-15 for 69 
yards.

Rivera said that after seeing the film, it became clear that Newton, the No. 1 
draft pick in April, has improved his mechanics since training camp opened.

"It was obvious, but more importantly, to make good decisions, and that's 
probably the biggest," said Rivera. "Every time I see the decisions of one man, 
raising allegedly do with the next part of the ball early and hit the receiver 
on and do these things."
Rivera had already suggested that it was the name of the regular season this 
week, but said Sunday that he is not ready.
"I think the best thing we have to do is to continue to assess the situation 
and circumstances," said Rivera. "I only went for about three and a half to

Rivera said that Hardy was a "defensive set down."

"He worked as and when he finished his starting point for defensive purposes," 
said Rivera. "I did not recognize it, I'm so used to him in street clothes to 
work. It lasts and mingle with your group and had the opportunity to leave with

"We are delighted to have him back on the football field."

Chris Gamble (groin) practiced on Sunday, while Jon Beason Linebacker 
(Achilles) as the only defensive actions still pending.
