This type of wrapping is sometimes referred to as syllabic, but actually Japanese is a mora-based script, rather than a syllable-based one.
Japanese uses a combination of three scripts (kanji, hiragana, and katakana), so "writing system" might be more appropriate here?
Point might be Hiragana and Katakana are mostly mora-based, but contracted sound (or diphthongs??) ones (such as ゃ) are some kind of exception??
