Discussed the top level overview. The goal of the meeting is to share people’s expectations.
Kobayashi-san expressed his expectations
It will be digital native and will based on reflow-able architecture.
Would like to add descriptions of abstract model of layout features and writing systems. Analyze actual layout features based on their abstract functions. For example Running Heads is one form of the navigation item. Should decide if each traditional layout feature is truly necessary to keep, because there are many alternatives on digital media.
As the media moves from papers with fixed size to screen that do not have the inherent size, many features that belonged to the page would change its nature. The design rules that has been established on paper do not make sense any more.
Nat: Should preserve the beauty of Japanese page layout, the beauty of empty spaces between page items. They will still make sense even on digital media with flexible screen sizes → todo: write it up
Accessibility is one of the important new content. It often helps wider range of people.
Kida expressed his expectations
It will be the digital native version of JLReq. Established practices, modified inevitably by the nature of digital devices. It will not be a place for experiments. Would like to maintain the flavour of normativeness the current version has.
Not sure if we should add too much of language independent content that Kobayashi-san suggested. It will not be an expectation for xlreq. Let’s limit them to the extent and places where they are useful to explain background of language specific features. Nonetheless, such discussions are interesting and would like to pursue them in a different form.
A separate document? (Shimono-san)
Concepts
Centered on reflow-able architecture. Layout happens on user’s devices.
Explicitly support cases where character width is proportional.
Make reasonable simplification
Provide priority and defaults, but not in a definitive way. Provide background information where possible.
Bin-sensei sent out a proposal for priority to the list earlier this year.
Japanese in internationalized system.
New Contents
Explicitly list technologies assumed and other assumptions
Use them to make implementations easier
Keep them minimal. Restrict to ones that has been established and expected to be stable for a long time
Basic concepts on Japanese line layout, esp. baseline vs grid, how to fit it in the baseline system.
Fonts: Basic info and requirements. How to combine Japanese fonts with other languages. regional glyph variants, etc. in an internationalized system.
Accessibility: Consideration for universal access mentioned in each feature.
Input system: They can play a role in improving the layout, especially by helping users to use appropriate punctuations
Can we pull useful knowledge from other areas than books?, e.g. graphics design, magazines, etc.
There was a general agreement to the direction. Kida to draft the table of contents. Review it at the next meeting.
Should label new sections so we know which parts need to be newly written (Kobayashi-san)
Please add an English version and check it in under /docs/ (Shimono-san)
TODO
Kida to draft the table of contents.
Nat to write up something in regard to the beauty of the Japanese page layout, in a way people can apply them on digital media.
