quintin: consider other dimensions of non-text content such as haptic feedback
quintin: Just trying to help people think that mobile introduces new concepts like haptics
I suppose something like haptics falls under the "multiple means"
Julian: Emojis + Custom emojis: Would we want to offer guidance from a linguistic perspective?
Quintin: Because intention is often the key communication, and I would argue to allow people to provide their own meaning in context
Julian: It's about surrounding context
Julian: Another thing is how to integrate emoji into body content - e.g. using them as bullet points
Detlev: Around context specific: Normally surrounding context is self-providing. I imagine an emoji would be better if there was a prescriptive word
That's what I live about :thumbs-up: for example - it's very well self described and non emotive
like not live
Joe: In terms of providing guidance - it should be separate from the main guidance
Quintin: Agree
great idea Joe_Humbert
Quintin: We should also be careful about letting "hot topics" take control
Summary:
Non-Text Content in Mobile:
Quintin: Emphasized the importance of considering other dimensions of non-text content, like haptic feedback, which is unique to mobile platforms. Highlighted that haptics might fall under the category of "multiple means" of providing information.
Guidance on Emojis:
Julian: Raised the topic of offering guidance on the use of emojis and custom emojis from a linguistic perspective. Discussed the significance of surrounding context in interpreting emojis.
Quintin: Suggested that the intention behind emojis is crucial and argued for allowing users to provide their own meaning in context.
Julian: Discussed the integration of emojis into body content, such as using them as bullet points.
Detlev: Mentioned that the surrounding context usually provides meaning, but a prescriptive word might improve clarity. Used the example of the thumbs-up emoji as being self-descriptive and non-emotive.
Joe: Suggested that guidance on emojis should be separate from the main guidance, a suggestion agreed upon by Quintin.
Aashutosh: Supported Joe's idea.
Quintin: Cautioned about allowing "hot topics" to dominate discussions, emphasizing the need for balanced and comprehensive consideration of all relevant issues.
