I do want to add some text to section 5 specific to authoring and consumption:

  1. Authoring concerns relate to applying more that one pronunciation/presentation feature to an element. The author will need to identify and selectively add/remove multiple data-ssml-* attributes. Readability for human and potential complexity concerns for authoring tools. This problem is pushed to managing/editing the JSON structure in the single attribute approach.

  2. Consumption concerns for Assistive Technology would focus on having to examine for presence of all possible initial data-ssml- attributes, and then presence of secondary data-ssml--* attributes based on initial finds. Depending on the type of AT, there are potentially multiple DOM hits per element, which is not the preferred way for Screen Readers who rely on the accessibility API.... this is not ARIA.
