Need for enhanced semantic elements for accessible digital publishing #42

Closed gregoriopellegrino closed 3 weeks ago

While working on making increasingly complex publications accessible, we've identified a gap in the current semantic markup capabilities for educational and literary content. There are several educational and editorial constructs that, while visually identifiable, lack proper semantic representation in current standards.

This enhancement may be considered within the scope of DPUB ARIA roles or similar specifications.

Examples of missing semantic elements:

  1. Exercises (critical both for educational publishing and for LMS')
  2. Worksheets
  3. Poetry structure (stanzas, line numbers)

Indeed. See also my comment at https://github.com/w3c/publ-maintenance-wg-charter/issues/43#issuecomment-2440048954

Right, and we still haven't gotten dpub-aria 1.1 published. I'm not sure if we can do another revision under their charter or not, but in any case the work should be taken up by a task force in that group.

Ideally, this would be part of a renewed effort at educational publishing, but is there any appetite for that?
