Personally, I agree with the reasoning. My only reservation is that I'm reluctant to make this change when the WG explicitly decided against it: see https://www.w3.org/Bugs/Public/show_bug.cgi?id=13204
Good to know that you encountered the same issue 9 years ago. We already got user feedback that revolved around the same question. Do you remember any of the reason that were brought up against making this change?

to some tests (if an expression is rewritten, it may not be possible anymore to strictly differentiate between these two error states).
