Hi all, Creating this issue as a placeholder for any canonical links for acronyms, abbreviations, and references in the Responsible Use note: https://w3c.github.io/sdw/responsible-use/ Cheers, Jo

jabhay commented 3 years ago
Acronym potential link
W3C www.w3.org
COVID-19 https://www.who.int/emergencies/diseases/novel-coronavirus-2019
GDPR Links in doc, but need to be added to all uses
CCPA As above
NGO I think an expansion to Non-Government Organisation should do
GNSS ???, perhaps https://www.gsc-europa.eu/gnss-market-applications/gnss-users
PII I think an expansion to Personally Identifiable Information should do
IMEI ???, perhaps https://portal.3gpp.org/desktopmodules/Specifications/SpecificationDetails.aspx?specificationId=567
IMSI ???, perhaps https://portal.3gpp.org/desktopmodules/Specifications/SpecificationDetails.aspx?specificationId=729

The acronym links do actually suggest to me that we should have a table for this, and have links refer to that table. I'm happy to whip something up there.

Also, I feel compelled to use wikipedia

Those 3gpp urls are indeed the correct ones!

Should we also add references where appropriate e.g. the source for my Washington cyclist example is - https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2020/06/what-its-like-to-get-doxed-for-taking-a-bike-ride.html ?

These are the links for 3. Data ethics

Seeing as COVID-19 is highly contagious, scientists have advised policies that ensure (social) isolation of COVID-19 patients: https://www.who.int/emergencies/diseases/novel-coronavirus-2019/advice-for-public

To control the spread of the virus, many countries prioritized the identification and location of these patients: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-04-28/coronavirus-covid19-contact-tracing-apps-around-the-world/12189438

The approach towards this policy varied. Some governments, e.g., in China (https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-51439401), Israel (https://www.ft.com/content/19d90308-6858-11ea-a3c9-1fe6fedcca75), Poland (https://www.cbsnews.com/news/coronavirus-update-poland-quarantine-app-asks-selfies-to-prove-isolation-social-distancing-police-patients/), Singapore (https://www.businessinsider.nl/singapore-coronavirus-app-tracking-testing-no-shutdown-how-it-works-2020-3?international=true&r=US), South Korea (https://qz.com/1810651/south-koreans-are-using-smartphone-apps-to-avoid-coronavirus/), and Japan (https://www.ibtimes.sg/free-medical-app-about-120-doctors-japan-offers-advise-users-about-coronavirus-39902) invited or legally obliged citizens to use track and trace COVID-19 apps

Private entities have been acquiring both real time and non-real time location information for years. https://digiday.com/marketing/companies-using-location-data-5-charts/

Location data have become a commodity. https://www.nytimes.com/2018/12/10/podcasts/the-daily/location-tracking-apps-privacy.html

Links for 1. Introduction: spatial data may be seen as a fingerprint: For an individual every combination of their location in space, time, and theme is unique. The collection and sharing of individuals spatial data can lead to beneficial insights and services, but it can also compromise citizens' privacy. https://www.edparsons.com/2020/06/the-ethics-of-geospatial-the-four-es/

Links for 2. Context The use of data is accelerating, not only owing to increasing technical possibilities like AI and earth observation, but also as a result of crises such as COVID-19 and climate change which accelerate the deployment of data and technology. https://digiday.com/marketing/companies-using-location-data-5-charts/

Apologies if this is hijacking the issue.

The GDPR link is correct, but the anchor text throughout the document https://www.w3.org/TR/responsible-use-spatial is probably a typo "GPDR" (seven occurrences)
