How can WoT use geospatial standards?

Back on 21-Jul-2022, Michael McCool asked to help him and his WG understand how Web of Things (WoT) can use existing geospatial standards to meet their needs, and also to determine where the gaps are. See Michael slides here.

WoT has a number of applications that are "geospatial" - including Building Information Management (BIM) and Smart Cities. Future requirements will likely include Digital Twins and, consequently, have even more reliance on geospatial. WoT planned to discuss use cases and requirements at TPAC this week also.

In terms of requirements for geospatial standards, WoT is mostly interested in leveraging modular ontologies for geospatial / geolocation. On 21-Jul we had some discussion on fitness for purpose of GeoSPARQL, Geopose, etc. Also, we noted how IETF's JSON-Path doesn't include generic javascript, which improves run-time safety but means it's difficult to extend, say, with distance calculations. More assessment / thinking was needed.

Where gaps are identified, WoT plans to create work items in their new Charter, with the work itself starting early next year. WoT hope to finalise their charter pretty soon, so we need to provide input ASAP.

It might be good to flag to the WoT people the IEC led "Standards Collaboration on Ontologies for Smart Cities and Smart City Systems" next week - or at least, as a community for them to relate to on standards w.r.t smart cities & digital twins.

Geo input will be from Ivana Ivanova, Yuqi Bai, and Sang Ki Hong all of TC 211 with Ivana also leading the OGC Data Quality DWG.

IETF's JSON-Path doesn't include generic javascript remin ds me that the current candidate OGC Community Standard 3D Tiles V1.1 includes non-standard javascripting to perform on-the-fly calculations. They are not averse to improved interoperability/standardisation in this area when I corresponded with the authors, but did not want to hold up there process. as several of OGC's API groups are also interested in on-the-fly calculations in a web environment, maybe this is a 'gap', admittedly with severe security implications.

Maps for HTML proposes both a \ element and using the existing HTML \ element in mapping contexts, which might help out with the Web of Things (by allowing crawlers as well as humans to navigate).
