Video geotagging format (WebVMT) #113

The Web Video Map Tracks Format is a proposal for a text format derived from WebVTT that allows to associate geotagging information with a video, for instance to synchronize video playback with movement on a map.

The proposal was raised by Rob Smith (@rjksmith) and is being discussed in the Spatial Data on the Web Interest Group. See:

    3. Produced two explainer videos to introduce the GeoPose candidate standard as part of ongoing alignment work with OGC GeoPose SWG.

    1. Submitted proposal to OGC Testbed-19 for follow-on investigation of road network use cases to integrate geo-aligned video with HTML using WebVMT.
    2. Addressed feedback on WebVMT Draft Note from Spatial Data on the Web Working Group prior to publication as a W3C Note which is a Charter deliverable.
    3. Participated in collaborative data capture at Ordnance Survey (OS) headquarters near Southampton with Open Site Plan and OS, and road network equipment loaned by National Highways (UK). Recorded concurrent footage of and from moving objects on 25-26 April 2023 for analysis in OGC Testbed-19.

    1. Presented Solent demo to OGC Testbed-20 GIMI meeting on 5 September 2024 showing how geotagged smartphone video can be aggregated and synchronized with AIS data for maritime use case.
    2. Added MapLibre web map API support to Javascript playback engine.
    3. Presented truck demo to OGC Testbed-20 GIMI meeting on 19 September 2024 showing how map heading can be exported from in-band geospatial metadata to match video perspective with MapLibre in a web browser.
    4. Raised issue in community group repo to propose heading for observations which was prototyped in OGC Testbed-19 for static cameras in the Hillyfields Bubble dataset.
