DID Method Standardization #38

Open mandyvenables opened 3 months ago

mandyvenables commented 3 months ago

Session description

Standardizing Decentralized Identifier (DID) Methods is important to progress W3C's foundational work on global identifiers that are not leased, but owned by individuals. This session will discuss a proposed W3C charter for web-based DID methods. We will also cover key categories of DID methods that have proven broadly useful, including self-resolvable, web-based, and decentralized methods. The goal is to standardize a few methods that are in production within these categories, ensuring they meet the needs of diverse use cases. To achieve this, the group will establish strong collaboration and liaison agreements among key organizations outside of W3C, minimizing barriers to participation and fostering a cooperative environment. Additionally, the effort will engage the broader community of DID builders, innovators, and adopters, inviting them to contribute to a detailed roadmap that guides the future of DID standardization.

Thank you for proposing a session!

You may update the session description as needed and at any time before the meeting, but please keep in mind that tooling relies on issue formatting: follow the instructions and leave all headings and other formatting intact in particular. Bots and W3C meeting organizers may also update the description, to fix formatting issues or add links and other relevant information. Please do not revert these changes. Feel free to use comments to raise questions.

Do not expect formal approval; W3C meeting organizers endeavor to schedule all proposed sessions that are in scope for a breakout. Actual scheduling should take place shortly before the meeting.
