[Abilities and Barriers: Cognitive] Barriers - sentences #248

From COGA requests and explanations for EO:

Change:

Complex sentences that are difficult to read and unusual words or metaphors that are difficult to understand.

To:

  • Complex sentences that are difficult to read.
  • Unfamiliar words including acronyms or complex text.
  • Metaphors and other non-literal text whose meaning is not clear to literal thinkers (who interpret language based on actual rather than implied meaning).

Because:

COGA wants to split this EO bullet into three items to emphasize the importance of each.

Generally, I am hesitant to separate out too many barriers as this would make this example list extremely long.

The barriers section do not really go into the 'why' of each barrier. That can be picked up from the broader resource.

Proposed alternative:

  • Complex sentences that are difficult to read and unusua words that are difficult to understand.
  • Metaphors and other non-literal text whose meaning is not predicatable from the usual meanings of the words.

I edited per Shawn's suggestion.
