many thanks for this fine-comb review eric!

most edits were excellent. some others i wasn't really sure about as a non-native speaker (like lots of additions of "the"), but opted to leave them in. others i felt changed the meaning and rolled them back (especially at this late stage of the process), and very few i simply didn't agree with ;-)
