Just starting this issue to collect comments from EO per Caleb's action item from our May 6 telecon. Let us know your ideas and we'll see what we can change as a possible update to the video player.

Not sure if you're wanting this conversation to be focused specifically on WAI's media player, but I thought it would be helpful to take a broad look at media players in general, starting with Able Player as a baseline. As the project lead for Able Player, I can share the choices that went into the current interface.

The greatest barrier to adoption is that everybody wants a minimal player these days, and they inevitably ask if they can eliminate some of those buttons and controls. So an overarching question I have is: Is accessibility dependent on having buttons and controls? They all serve an important purpose, but is there an alternative way to present them that would satisfy the desire for a minimalist design without sacrificing functionality or usability? I'd love to hear creative solutions.

Meanwhile, here's a run-down of are all possible buttons and controls on the Able Player controller, with some commentary on each. I've also attached a screen shot below of a fully-loaded video player:

It's important to note that buttons only appear if they're relevant to a particular video (e.g., if you don't offer chapters, description, sign language, or captions none of those buttons will appear, nor will the transcript button). Of course it's preferable to include those features, and in some cases critical for accessibility.

Also: It's important to keep in mind that buttons must be high contrast and should be large enough to be easy targets for mousers with limited dexterity.

Here's a screen shot:

I think the player UI is OK. It does not have priority from my point of view.

Chairs agree the player UI is OK, not a current priority, can be closed.
