Some French translators are suggesting that words left in English are marked up with <i>.

It's always best to use a class to indicate the semantic value you are associating with the i tag – especially when dealing with translation. French orthotypography standards call for using italic :

"Les mots, expressions, citations donnés dans une langue étrangère et non francisés se composent en italique dans un texte français en romain" – Lexique des règles typographiques en usage à l'Imprimerie nationale).

The i tag seems to be the more appropriate, combined with the lang attribute (and maybe a class, especially if the i tag is used for other purposes)
