Update IETF references, clean up whitespace #216

Having a look at the document, I noticed that a lot of the IETF references were outdated and/or could be replaced with pointers to the published RFCs.

Since my editor removes trailing whitespace on saving, I also more or less accidentally cleaned up the document of excess whitespace, but decided to keep these changes in to further increase the document's maintainability. There also was a strange IMAGES file that seemed to have no real purpose but caused problems on my system – I hope removing that one is also okay.

Thanks, this is a useful set of fixes. Please look at my suggestions above, and let's put this at the top of the agenda for our next meeting and get it merged.
