[RNIB] 4.10 Gestural interfaces and interactions #27

Filed on behalf of RNIB: Original comments sent to APA list

Regarding User Need 9 - During ImAc Project testing, people with severe sight loss asked for an alternative to a headset as 1) headsets felt unnecessary and 2) led to a feeling of increased isolation.

This isn’t possible in the current scenario with headsets needed for tracking but something for hardware developers to bear in mind for future developments.

Some users also told us they would like to use touch screen accessibility gestures (e.g. swipes, flicks and single, double or triple taps with 1, 2 or 3 fingers) on a second screen device to navigate menus. These would be cheaper, more familiar and more readily available than gloves?

Interesting finding regarding enhanced sense of isolation when using a headset. Use of these things is not a requirement and should be used - as needed to facilitate gestural interaction. This could be mediate via some other technology.

I like the use/suggestion of 'touch screen accessibility gestures on a second screen device' being used for navigation or even some other personalised type of interaction.

Relates to 4.10 https://www.w3.org/TR/xaur/#gestural-interfaces-and-interactions

This was discussed again in RQTF https://www.w3.org/2020/05/20-rqtf-minutes.html

The consensus was that there is a need to talk about this need at a higher level of abstraction. No need to explicitly mentioned headset or gloves etc - so this can be removed. We can talk about  we talk about hardware and diverse combinations in an intro section.

This issue is useful, and helps us abstract our user needs more carefully. Thanks.

Yes, many thanks, I agree.

The issue of headsets had come out quite strongly during the interviews and a mention in the introductory notes/ section would draw sufficient attention to it.

Thats great Sonali - and this feedback is very helpful! @Raisonali

@Raisonali I've added a New draft requirement: REQ 9a: Support touch screen accessibility gestures (e.g. swipes, flicks and single, double or triple taps with 1, 2 or 3 fingers) on a second screen device to navigate menus and interact. ++ also I moved the new requirement to primary position - about second screen use, (which is a really useful IMO)

This is so helpful, thanks so much!
