I think these are seen as animals, in that their behaviour isn't determined the
same way as normal dwarves. For example, a miner upgraded to noble would spend
a lot of time in their quarters doing the job 'noble', and stop digging
altogether. Don't know how or why this works the way it does.

I know this was a year ago and you've probably figured out what actually causes
this by now, but for anyone else reading this: This happens in every single one
of my forts eventually and I usually have three or more of them... A dwarf that
dies and is not buried or memorialized can sometimes become a ghost. Ghosts are
not listed under the main units in the game, but under Other Units. However,
Dwarf Therapist still shows the ghost as a dwarf, which is kind of silly, cause
you can toggle jobs on them, but they don't follow those jobs. I think ghosts
should stay on the Therapist, but have an indicator that it's a ghost and jobs
grayed out for them, cause it's not like it's a secret undead unit like the
vampire, after all.
